Fragment shader
A shading program in the GPU rendering pipeline that executes once per covered pixel; its computational cost grows linearly with resolution, making it the main performance bottleneck for large-area effects such as skies.

The fragment shader executes once for each covered pixel, so when the sky occupies a large area of the screen the cost grows linearly with resolution; the vertex shader executes only for geometric vertices, whose number is usually far smaller than the pixel count.
