Interlayer Anisotropy
The phenomenon in which 3D-printed parts exhibit differences in mechanical properties between layers (Z axis) and within layers (XY plane), with interlayer strength typically lower than in-layer strength; it is an inherent challenge of the FDM process.

FDM-printed parts typically have only 50%-80% of their XY-plane strength in the Z-axis direction, because interlayer bonding relies on molecular chain diffusion and entanglement rather than a continuous material body.
