IPFS
A decentralized peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol and distributed file system that uses content addressing to identify and retrieve files by their data hash rather than by location. It is designed as an alternative to the traditional location-based HTTP protocol.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The core idea of IPFS is to replace traditional location addressing with content addressing: traditional HTTP locates a server by URL to retrieve a file, whereas IPFS generates for each file a hash value (CID) computed based on its content.
Ethereum, Cloudflare and others have all integrated or support IPFS gateways.
IPFS is not a blockchain, nor is it equivalent to permanent storage; it needs to be paired with an incentive layer such as Filecoin to ensure content remains available long term.
When encapsulating an image generation model as an agent tool, (model, seed, prompt, input) can be used as a key for reproducibility, with outputs stored in content-addressable storage (IPFS or S3 with SHA256 keys).
Git's object storage, IPFS, and the ETag mechanism of cloud object storage all embody the concept of content-addressable storage.
The Multihash specification was proposed by Protocol Labs and is one of the foundational components of the IPFS (InterPlanetary File System) ecosystem.
CID (Content Identifier) is an identification scheme that further encapsulates codec format and version information on top of Multihash, and is widely used in IPFS and Filecoin.
Decentralized storage protocols such as IPFS can be used to counter the risk of single-point deletion.
Decentralized storage solutions are constrained by large-file transfer speeds, the sustainability of node incentives, and the absence of content moderation, and have yet to become mainstream.
Decentralized protocols (such as IPFS and BitTorrent) were once seen as technical solutions for circumventing compliance difficulties, but in practice face issues such as low retrieval efficiency, poor user experience, and cold-start challenges.
