ITER
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, a tokamak nuclear fusion device constructed in France through a collaboration of 35 countries. It is the largest fusion experiment of its kind in the world, designed to demonstrate the scientific feasibility of fusion energy, with a construction cost exceeding 20 billion euros.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The representative devices of magnetic confinement fusion are the tokamak (such as ITER) and the stellarator, whose advantages are long plasma confinement times and relatively clear physical mechanisms, while the disadvantages are enormous device size and extremely high construction costs.
The high-temperature superconducting magnet technology used by CFS can produce a magnetic field strength approximately twice that of conventional superconducting magnets (approximately 20 tesla), theoretically allowing the device volume to be reduced to about 1/40 that of ITER.
Government-led projects such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) have spent tens of billions of dollars and decades and are still under construction.
The ITER project is located in France.
In an ITER-class device, a plasma disruption can release approximately 350 megajoules of thermal energy and approximately 1 gigajoule of magnetic energy, generating electromagnetic forces of up to several thousand tonnes.
ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is expected to achieve full-power operation in 2035.
ITER is expected to achieve full-power operation in 2035.
The ITER International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor costs 22 billion euros.
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor ITER is the representative project of the tokamak approach, costing 22 billion euros.
