LALM
A Large Audio Language Model (LALM) is a class of multimodal models capable of processing audio input and performing language understanding and generation. It typically consists of an audio encoder, a language model and a language model head, and can carry out tasks such as speech recognition and emotion recognition.

VocalGrad research shows that current state-of-the-art LALMs achieve accuracy close to random guessing on a purely acoustic perceptual directional binary classification task stripped of semantic reasoning.
Through linear probing analysis, VocalGrad research found two failure modes in LALMs: representations exist but the LM head does not exploit them, and information gradually becomes non-linearly decodable as it propagates across layers.
The LM head is the final decoding module in a large audio language model that maps internal representations to a probability distribution over text tokens.
