Mac Computer Use
An open-source macOS desktop automation toolkit designed for AI agents. It addresses common pain points in agent desktop operations—such as action granularity, timing, focus management, and result confirmation—through an observe-act-verify closed-loop mechanism. The toolkit supports both native UI interactions and Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP)-based web content interaction.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Mac Computer Use is an open-source project that provides AI Agents with a callable package of desktop execution skills.
Mac Computer Use's core methodology is a three-step closed loop of "observe—act—verify": rehearse before execution, execute only once, and read back the target state after execution to confirm.
When the state cannot be confirmed, Mac Computer Use returns unknown (exit code 2) rather than failing and retrying.
Exit code 2 (unknown) means "unable to determine the result," exit code 1 (failure) means "confirmation failed," and upon receiving unknown an Agent should pause and report rather than retry on its own.
Mac Computer Use provides a Native Doctor self-check command that returns four categories of information: accessibility and screen recording permissions, system version, chip architecture, and the current foreground application.
Mac Computer Use's CDP Targets feature can connect to embedded web pages to read page structure, supporting the operation of Chromium-based desktop applications.
The prerequisites for installing Mac Computer Use are macOS 14 or above and Swift 6; the CDP feature additionally requires Node 22.4 or above, and the installer requires Python 3.
Mac Computer Use does not pop up authorization dialogs or modify the permissions database; users must manually grant accessibility, screen, and system recording permissions in System Settings.
Mac Computer Use's foreground operations require the user to be idle for at least 2 seconds and wait at most 15 seconds, use a drawing lock, and stop as soon as the user resumes input.
Mac Computer Use is compatible with 8 clients, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenClaude, and other mainstream Agent tools.
