Managed Instance Link
A Microsoft technology for near-real-time replication from SQL Server to Azure SQL Managed Instance, built on distributed availability groups to achieve continuous data synchronization. It allows the source to continue serving clients during migration, minimizing downtime.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Managed Instance Link (MI Link) is implemented based on the distributed availability group mechanism, establishing a continuous data synchronization link between the source SQL Server and the target Azure SQL Managed Instance.
MI Link supports SQL Server 2016 and later versions, covering on-premises, Azure VMs and other cloud environments.
MI Link has recently extended support to multiple databases in an existing availability group, allowing an entire availability group to participate in migration, whereas previously migration was typically done per individual database.
For supported configurations of SQL Server 2022 and 2025, MI Link provides failback capability.
