Manifest File
A dependency-management component that declares the dependencies a project requires and their version ranges. Together with the lockfile it ensures consistency of the dependency environment.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Manifest files (such as package.json, requirements.txt, Cargo.toml) declare project dependencies and version ranges; lock files (such as package-lock.json, poetry.lock, Cargo.lock) precisely record the actual installed version of each dependency and the complete dependency tree.
When lock files are out of sync with the manifest, different machines may install different versions of dependencies, causing "it works on my machine" problems.
