OONI Probe
A free, open-source network censorship measurement tool developed by the OONI project. It supports iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms and is capable of detecting website blocking, application blocking, DNS tampering, and traffic throttling. Measurement data collected by the tool is contributed to a publicly available dataset for use in research.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The OONI (Open Observatory of Network Interference) project provides an open-source tool called OONI Probe for measuring and recording censorship on networks.
OONI Probe is free and open-source software that supports running on iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux.
OONI Probe's core function is to detect website blocking by attempting to access potentially censored websites and comparing the results against expected behavior on uncensored networks.
OONI Probe can test the availability of instant messaging applications (such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and Facebook Messenger) as well as censorship circumvention tools (such as Tor and Psiphon).
OONI Probe can measure network speed and performance, and detect whether there is man-in-the-middle traffic tampering behavior on the network.
OONI Probe identifies DNS poisoning by comparing local DNS query results against authoritative resolution results from uncensored networks.
When OONI Probe runs tests, it sends real network requests to the services being tested, and the local IP address appears in the request logs, which may trigger traffic analysis systems to flag it.
