PaperToProfit
An open-source tool for AI-based receipt recognition and business analysis. A user photographs handwritten receipts with a phone; multimodal large models and OCR extract structured data, and the system generates financial dashboards and sales forecasts.
Timeline (last 90 days)
PaperToProfit is an open-source project submitted by developer Sapnil M in the Hacktoberfest open-source AI challenge, licensed under MIT and hosted on GitHub.
The vision extraction pipeline designed for PaperToProfit prioritizes the Google Gemini Flash Vision API, which can recognize restaurant shorthand in about 1.5 seconds.
The second tier of PaperToProfit's vision extraction pipeline is Llama 3.2 Vision running on Groq, using LPUs for low-latency inference.
When the network is unavailable, PaperToProfit falls back to the local ONNX model RapidOCR, detecting text boxes on the CPU and pairing dish names with quantities and prices via a two-dimensional spatial clustering algorithm that groups by a vertical midpoint threshold and sorts by horizontal coordinates.
PaperToProfit integrates Prior Labs' TabPFN-3.5 tabular foundation model, reframing the time-series problem as tabular features (day of week, date index, recent moving averages, order volume, etc.) to forecast sales for the next 7 days with upper and lower confidence intervals.
PaperToProfit uses a threshold of |Z| > 1.6 to flag anomalous fluctuations and generate stock-up recommendations.
PaperToProfit's backend uses FastAPI to serve both the REST API and the frontend static assets on a single port, uses embedded SQLite for data persistence, and uses vanilla JavaScript with Chart.js and Lucide icons on the frontend.
With local models or free cloud quotas, PaperToProfit's marginal cost per receipt approaches zero, making a micro-SaaS subscription model of $9 to $15 per month (roughly 300 to 500 rupees) viable while retaining over 95% gross margin.
PaperToProfit includes a BCG menu matrix based on sales volume and profit margin that classifies dishes into the four quadrants of stars, dogs, puzzles and eliminations, and provides real-time gross margin, ingredient cost, average ticket size, 14-day revenue trajectory, cash vs. UPI payment split and an hourly prep-peak heatmap.
PaperToProfit supports one-click CSV export for tax filing and bookkeeping, and provides a Dockerfile for easy containerized deployment.
