PCEI
An open-source edge embodied intelligence project that combines BitNet 1.58b quantization, Mamba state space models, and FastKAN spline networks. Its architecture is designed starting from hardware constraints and supports Mac Apple Silicon and Linux/CUDA platforms.
Timeline (last 90 days)
PCEI is an open-source project whose full name is Physically Constrained Emergent Intelligence, combining three technologies—BitNet 1.58b, Mamba and FastKAN—for on-device embodied intelligence.
BitNet 1.58b quantization uses ternary weights {-1, 0, +1} in PCEI's 24-layer network, reducing parameter memory by about 4 times compared with FP16 precision, and at inference time integer addition can replace floating-point multiplication.
FastKAN is an efficient implementation of the Kolmogorov-Arnold network that uses B-splines to replace the fixed activation functions of traditional MLPs, and in PCEI it is used for continuous motion control in the MuJoCo physics engine while handling 4 control streams.
The PCEI project supports two hardware paths, Mac Apple Silicon and Linux/CUDA, with the training pipeline and evaluation suite fully open-sourced under the MIT-NC license.
The PCEI project comes with 11 research papers, one of which, an evaluation paper on continuous latent buffers, proves an 'irrecoverable Shannon information loss factor', indicating that theoretically irreversible information loss exists in the process of continuous latent space compression.
PCEI represents the technical route of 'extreme compression + linear architecture', which is fundamentally at odds with the route of 'distilling large models to the edge'; the advantage of the compression route is that inference efficiency has a clear upper bound, and the disadvantage is that the expressive power of ternary weights may be limited.
PCEI's experiments are currently concentrated in the MuJoCo simulation environment, and whether the spline-fitting capability FastKAN demonstrates in simulation can generalize to the noisy environment of real robots remains unknown.
The author of the PCEI project explicitly states at the end of the Reddit post that feedback and criticism are welcome.
