Physical RSI
Physical RSI refers to the meta-process by which robots continuously update their own capabilities and their ability to improve those capabilities through physical experience, forming a recursive self-improvement paradigm. In contrast to purely software or algorithmic RSI, it faces obstacles including observation noise, continuous dynamics, high trial-and-error costs, and irreversible consequences.

A study titled "Who Improves the Robot? Toward Physical Recursive Self-Improvement" proposes the concept of "Physical Recursive Self-Improvement" (Physical RSI for short) and provides an L0 to L5 graded framework.
Physical RSI requires that the robot not only improve its task capabilities but also improve the "meta-process of improvement capability," and that this meta-learning strategy can transfer across tasks.
The paper lists four obstacles faced by Physical RSI: large observation noise, continuous and complex dynamics, high cost of trial and error, and irreversible consequences.
Among the surveyed literature, no work is yet able to demonstrate Physical RSI as defined by this framework.
