Plug-in Estimator

A classical class of statistical inference methods in which unknown quantities in a model, such as a density, are first estimated from data and the estimates are then substituted directly into the expression for a target functional to obtain an estimate of that quantity. Its theoretical analysis is relatively direct, and when the density estimate attains the optimal rate, the target functional estimate inherits favorable convergence properties.
