PSI
A statistical metric for measuring the difference between the distributions of two datasets, commonly used for data drift detection. It is computed by binning and comparing changes in sample proportions across intervals, similar to a symmetrized KL divergence.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Statistics such as KL divergence and PSI (Population Stability Index) are often used to measure distribution shift in batch data, but are difficult to apply directly to the serialized, context-laden behavior of Agents.
PSI detection is mainly applicable to covariate drift and label drift, since it only focuses on feature distributions and does not involve labels.
The simplified interpretation standard for PSI is: PSI < 0.10 indicates almost no significant change, and PSI reaching 0.20 indicates significant drift.
PSI is calculated by binning continuous features (usually 10 intervals), counting the proportion of samples in each interval in the baseline dataset and the new dataset, and for each bin computing (actual proportion − expected proportion) × ln(actual proportion / expected proportion) and summing them.
PSI is mathematically similar to a symmetrized KL divergence and is relatively sensitive to relative changes in distributions.
When using PSI, note that: bin boundaries must follow those of the baseline data; the sample size in each bin should not be too small; a smoothing term is needed for bins with zero proportion; and only numerical features or binned categorical features are handled.
When publishing PSI as a CloudWatch metric, it is recommended to use 'feature name', 'dataset version', and 'model version' as dimensions, to facilitate filtering, aggregation, and alarm configuration.
The industry typically monitors the degree of data drift continuously using statistical metrics such as PSI (Population Stability Index) and KL divergence, triggering model retraining when thresholds are exceeded.
Common methods for distribution drift detection include KL Divergence (Kullback-Leibler Divergence), the KS test (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test), and the PSI (Population Stability Index) metric.
All JetBrains IDEs are built on the IntelliJ Platform, providing core components such as the PSI syntax tree, VFS virtual file system, and code indexing engine.
