Quiet Zone
The blank margin surrounding a QR code or barcode symbol, used to help decoders locate the symbol boundary, separate it from the background, and calculate module size and grid coordinates. The ISO/IEC 18004 specification requires a width of at least four modules on each side.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The ISO/IEC 18004 specification requires that each side of a QR code symbol have a blank quiet zone at least four modules wide.
Different decoders vary greatly in their tolerance for a missing quiet zone: some implementations perform edge detection and adaptive thresholding, while others with fixed-threshold segmentation simply fail.
Padding added by the caller via CSS may blend into adjacent dark UI on a dark page background, causing the quiet zone to effectively be deleted.
