Reranking
A technique used in RAG systems to apply a second-stage sorting pass on initial retrieval results. By computing more refined relevance scores, it improves the quality of the content ultimately passed to the generation stage.
Core Facts
The reranking stage typically uses a Cross-Encoder, which jointly encodes the query and document by concatenating them, enabling more accurate relevance judgment than bi-encoder models but at a higher computational cost.
Reranking technology first uses coarse retrieval to recall a large number of candidate segments, then uses a fine-ranking model to re-score them, keeping only the most relevant content to feed into the model.
Reranking uses a Cross-Encoder model to re-score and re-rank the candidate chunks recalled by Top-K, with precision far higher than that of a Bi-Encoder.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Re-ranking is typically the technique that yields the greatest quality improvement per unit of effort: first retrieve a broader candidate set of 30 to 50 results, then re-score them with a cross-encoder or re-ranking model.
A two-stage retrieval strategy typically first uses vector retrieval to coarsely recall 20–50 candidates, then uses a reranking model to select the final 3–5 items passed to the LLM.
Setting differentiated weights for documents from different sources in a RAG system can be achieved through two approaches: adjusting score weights during the retrieval stage (Reranking) and explicitly specifying conflict priorities via System Prompt during the generation stage, and these two approaches can be used in combination.
Reranking is the step of performing a second-pass fine-ranking on candidate results after initial retrieval.
Reranking models are a second-stage optimization in RAG pipelines that perform fine-grained relevance scoring and reordering of candidate documents against a query after vector retrieval returns candidate results
Embedding generation, reranking, and information extraction are ideal workloads for prioritized migration to self-hosting, as the models are small, call frequency is extremely high, and they can easily saturate GPUs.
Embedding and Reranking task models are smaller, have fast individual inference times, and are called at extremely high frequency, making it easier to keep the GPU fully utilized; they are the ideal workloads to migrate first in self-hosting, followed by generation tasks.
