Residential Proxy
A proxy service that forwards traffic through real user devices, with IP addresses originating from residential networks. Such addresses are difficult for traditional blocklists to identify and are often used to conceal malicious traffic.
Core Facts
Timeline (last 90 days)
Security research firm Layer3 Intel published a blog post stating that it detected residential proxy activity in the White House network.
For networks with high security requirements, consideration can be given to deploying machine-learning-based traffic anomaly detection, implementing strict admission control and continuous verification for internal devices, building a residential proxy IP intelligence database for offline comparison, and restricting sensitive systems to access only from managed devices.
Equating "detection of residential proxies" directly with "APT intrusion" is not rigorous; remote work, privacy tools, software testing and even accelerators self-installed by employees can all produce similar traffic characteristics, and judgment requires an evidence chain combining the frequency of proxy connections, destination addresses, data exfiltration volume and whether associated terminals are compromised.
Residential proxies are often used in APT operations as relays for command-and-control (C2) communications, blending the source IPs of malicious traffic into massive volumes of normal residential traffic to bypass IP-reputation-based blocking.
For enterprise and government networks, IP attributes alone cannot distinguish whether access from a residential IP is a malicious relay or a normal employee working from home; judgment must combine multi-dimensional signals such as device identity, access time and request patterns.
Users are often unaware, and their bandwidth and IPs are resold to paying customers, billed by traffic or by IP.
The residential proxy ecosystem usually consists of three types of players: proxy service providers build the control platform and sell access entry points externally; SDKs/proxy clients are implanted into ordinary users' devices or infect always-on terminals under the guise of free VPNs, accelerators or cashback plugins; and residential nodes are the real home network exit points being exploited.
Residential proxies generally refer to proxy services relayed through real user devices (such as home routers and smart home devices), whose IP addresses come from residential networks and are difficult for traditional blacklist mechanisms to identify.
Attackers may use residential proxies or compromised devices for password spraying; these IPs have higher reputation, so IP reputation is not absolutely reliable and must be judged in combination with other signals.
In the residential proxy scraping experiment, all 1,000 job posting pages were returned successfully, using 37 different home residential IPs, with zero errors and zero rejections, and more than 5,200 job listings were scraped, with all requests returning 200 status codes.

Residential proxy IPs are allocated to real home broadband users and look no different from ordinary viewers to YouTube; data center proxy IPs belong to cloud providers or hosting facilities and are easily identified and banned.

50%UnverifiedResidential proxies are harder for target sites to identify and ban than data center proxies, but they cost more and have more variable latency.

50%UnverifiedEvaluating residential proxies should examine four dimensions: IP source and type, static or rotating, IP exclusivity and quality, and protocols and service capabilities.
50%UnverifiedResidential proxies are assigned to home users by real ISPs, and traffic passes through real devices, making them harder to identify as bots; mobile proxies come from cellular networks, where IPs are shared among large numbers of real users, making blocking extremely costly.
50%UnverifiedWAF judgment is based on accumulated IP reputation; once a single residential IP is blacklisted, it will most likely not recover in the short term.
50%UnverifiedResidential proxy services can provide real residential IPs, but they are more expensive and their use itself exists in a compliance gray area.
50%UnverifiedResidential proxy services are typically billed by traffic volume, with the cost per GB of traffic far exceeding that of data center proxies.
50%UnverifiedResidential proxies possess enormous IP pools, with addresses numbering in the millions, making the blocking of individual IPs of limited effect.

50%UnverifiedAfter exit nodes are removed, abusive traffic often migrates to the remaining nodes or to channels such as VPNs, cloud hosts, and residential proxies.
