ConceptTime-Stamp Protocol
RFC 3161
A timestamp protocol standard defined by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). It specifies that an application computes a cryptographic hash of a file and sends it to a time-stamping authority, which binds an authoritative time and returns a signature, thereby proving that the data existed at a certain moment.

Timestamps are usually based on the RFC 3161 protocol: the application first computes a cryptographic hash (such as SHA-256) of the file, then sends the hash value to the timestamp authority, which binds the hash to an authoritative time source, signs it and returns it.
