SDECast
A continuous-time probabilistic weather forecasting model based on neural stochastic differential equations (Neural SDEs) that generates ensemble forecasts at arbitrary temporal resolutions. It directly learns stochastic dynamics in physical space via SDE Matching, without requiring repeated SDE simulation during training.
Timeline (last 90 days)
SDECast uses Neural Stochastic Differential Equations (Neural SDE) to achieve probabilistic weather forecasting in continuous time.
SDECast models weather evolution as a stochastic process evolving in continuous time, rather than as jumps across discrete time steps.
SDECast extends the SDE Matching method to enable direct learning of stochastic dynamics in physical space.
The training process of SDECast does not require repeated SDE simulations during training, thereby reducing computational overhead and improving scalability.
In simulated geophysical flow field experiments, SDECast is able to recover meaningful drift dynamics and reproduce the underlying continuous-time behavior.
In global weather forecasting tasks at hourly resolution, SDECast can generate skillful probabilistic forecasts with a lead time of up to five days.
As a newly released preprint result, SDECast's performance still requires more independent evaluation and verification in real operational environments, particularly lacking systematic comparison with mainstream AI meteorological models.
SDECast's continuous-time stochastic framework provides a new pathway for uncertainty quantification in AI models that differs from diffusion model ensembles or explicit perturbation methods.
