SpecMRL
A representation learning method that improves on Matryoshka Representation Learning (MRL) by reorganizing the feature space through a parameter-derived spectral basis ordered by feature importance, so that nested prefix readout occurs in spectral space, thereby improving representation compression efficiency.
Timeline (last 90 days)
SpecMRL reorganizes the feature space via a parameter-derived spectral basis, achieving more effective prefix readout.
Experiments on MTEB show that SpecMRL outperforms MRL at all evaluated reduced dimensions.
SpecMRL's gains over MRL are larger under more aggressive compression.
SpecMRL surpasses full-dimensional MRL using only half the embedding dimensions.
SpecMRL does not change the outer training objective, but instead enhances the readability of prefixes by reorganizing the feature space.
SpecMRL's spectral basis is derived from model parameters and is end-to-end learnable, rather than being a post-hoc decomposition of fixed representations.
SpecMRL's advantage on MTEB is consistent, but no independent reproduction or third-party analysis has yet been seen.
For scenarios requiring flexible deployment (such as edge devices or low-latency retrieval), SpecMRL means better performance at the same dimensions, or acceptable accuracy at lower dimensions.
By placing the readout operation in a spectral space ordered by importance, SpecMRL makes prefix truncation naturally correspond to the most informative directions, alleviating the lack of explicit constraints in MRL.
