SpinQuant
A learning-based orthogonal rotation quantization method that learns the rotation matrix through iterative optimization during the quantization calibration stage. It achieves better quantization results than fixed-transform methods but requires an additional optimization process, with high GPU memory and time overhead.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Existing orthogonal transform methods fall roughly into two categories: data-independent fixed transforms (such as the Hadamard rotation) and rotation matrices learned during the calibration stage (such as SpinQuant and DartQuant).
Learned rotation methods (such as SpinQuant and DartQuant) require repeated iterative optimization of the rotation matrix before quantization, resulting in high memory usage and long runtime.
SpectrumQuant's GPU memory requirement is less than one-third that of learned rotation methods (such as SpinQuant), and its time cost is also significantly lower.
SpectrumQuant provides a PTQ deployment option that does not require running a full optimization pipeline like SpinQuant yet achieves comparable results.
Meta's research team proposed the SpinQuant method in 2024, attempting to maintain model capabilities at lower precision.
