WavePrune
An inference optimization method targeting RoPE positional encoding. By constraining each channel to its first rotational cycle, it eliminates position aliasing, improving a model's long-context comprehension performance without requiring additional training.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The WavePrune paper proposes that the rotational periodicity of RoPE introduces a position aliasing side effect, making it difficult to distinguish relative positions that differ by exactly one full rotation period.
WavePrune's core method restricts each channel to its first rotation period, assigning different effective visible ranges to channels of different frequencies.
On the HELMET long-context evaluation benchmark, WavePrune achieves score improvements on four out of the five models tested, without requiring additional tuning.
After applying WavePrune to Qwen3-8B, the HELMET score improved from 35.7 to 40.0.
WavePrune can be directly applied to existing models during inference without retraining.
Models pretrained from scratch using WavePrune achieve lower validation loss on extrapolated lengths than baseline models trained without it.
At a 32K context length, WavePrune achieves 1.15× prefill speedup and 1.24× decoding speedup compared to FlashAttention-2.
WavePrune restricts each channel to a sliding window, introducing fine-grained sparsity that allows computations outside the window to be directly skipped.
The paper's authors designed hardware-aligned CUDA kernels to exploit the channel-level non-uniform sparse structure introduced by WavePrune.
The paper argues that the periodic structure of RoPE is largely redundant or even harmful beyond the first rotation period.
