Multimodal Model
A multimodal model is a class of artificial intelligence model capable of jointly processing and understanding two or more data modalities, such as text, images, audio, and video. Its defining characteristic is cross-modal information fusion and collaborative reasoning, enabling the model to establish semantic associations between different modalities and perform tasks such as image-text understanding, visual question answering, and cross-modal generation. Compared to single-modality models, multimodal models more closely approximate the way humans perceive the world and have broad applications in natural language processing, computer vision, and human-computer interaction.
Core Facts
Multimodal large models can simultaneously process images, video frames, and text, and establish semantic associations between these modalities.
Multimodal large models split images into fixed patches, convert them into high-dimensional vectors via a visual encoder (based on the ViT architecture), and align them to the language model's token embedding space—this is inference, not reading.
Current large models processing video do not understand it frame by frame; instead, they use intelligent sampling to extract key frames from the video (typically 1–4 frames per second) as image inputs for analysis.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The last mile between multimodal models and vertical domains may not require a large engineering team; one researcher plus a suitable toolchain can get it done.
A multimodal model refers to a model capable of simultaneously processing multiple input forms such as text, images, and audio.
Although current mainstream multimodal models can recognize objects in images, they still frequently fail on tasks that require tracking mutual constraints among multiple objects and predicting the consequences of motion.
Multimodal capability means the model simultaneously understands text, images and even audio; such models have more parameters and higher pre-training costs, and the barrier to running them locally is significantly higher than for pure text models.
The advantage of a native multimodal architecture is that semantic information carried by the prosody, pauses, and tone of speech is not discarded at the ASR stage.
The biggest difference between multimodal models and pure text models lies in the input format: multimodal interfaces support mixing image data (typically Base64-encoded or image URLs) into messages.
Multimodal large language models often rely on language priors rather than truly relevant visual evidence when answering visual reasoning questions.
Models released just a few months earlier generalized poorly, performing almost no better than random guessing in certain settings.
针对低资源、非主流书写系统的AI适配正在成为多模态模型落地的重要课题
When a multimodal foundation model itself possesses image editing capabilities, face-swap tasks can be completed within a unified set of model weights, eliminating the need for cross-tool pipeline stitching.
