Remote Attestation
A key companion mechanism of TEEs in which a hardware-generated quote, containing code measurements and a vendor-signed certificate chain, enables an external verifier to confirm that the expected code is running inside the enclave and that the hardware has not been tampered with.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Remote attestation is a prerequisite for TEE usability, enabling external parties to verify that the code running inside the enclave is indeed the expected code and that the hardware has not been tampered with.
The core mechanism of remote attestation is: when the enclave starts, the hardware generates a quote containing the code measurement and a certificate chain signed with the vendor's private key, and the verifier checks the signature against the vendor root certificate and compares the measurement.
Common difficulties in remote attestation practice include: measurements changing frequently with code versions, which makes whitelist maintenance costly; certificate expiration and root certificate updates; the fragmentation of root trust across multiple vendors; and the attestation service itself becoming a single point of dependency.
SayGM provides a remote attestation endpoint accompanied by hardware-signed evidence.
The Remote Attestation mechanism allows users to cryptographically verify before each session that the enclave code has not been tampered with, and is currently the most technically convincing verifiable means in TEE solutions.
