This generation of foldables may seem like a continuation of Samsung's characteristically steady approach, but the product positioning and hardware details reveal some intriguing strategic moves.



Z Flip 8: A Safe, Incremental Upgrade
The new clamshell foldable Z Flip 8 looks very similar to last year's Flip 7, but it's thinner and lighter — 8 grams lighter and 0.5mm thinner. This is the kind of measured upgrade everyone expected.
On the performance front, it packs the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip, putting it on par with the S26 series and sharing the same performance, imaging pipeline, and NPU. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy is Qualcomm's flagship mobile processor custom-built for Samsung, manufactured on TSMC's 3nm process. The "for Galaxy" suffix indicates deep co-engineering between Samsung and Qualcomm, with bespoke optimizations to GPU clock speeds, NPU scheduling strategies, and the ISP (Image Signal Processor) pipeline tailored specifically for Samsung's One UI system and camera algorithms. The NPU (Neural Processing Unit) is one of the core selling points of today's flagship chips, handling on-device AI tasks including real-time photo semantic segmentation, AI noise reduction, text summarization, and voice recognition — all computed locally without needing to upload to the cloud.
There are also some detail improvements: the inner edges now have a chamfered finish, making the phone easier to open and close; and the cover screen interaction is closer to a standard phone experience — swipe down from the left for notifications, from the right for quick settings, and swipe up from the bottom to open apps.
For users holding a model from one or two generations ago, an 8-gram weight reduction and 0.5mm thinning aren't compelling enough reasons to upgrade. But this is Samsung's classic "slow and steady refinement" iteration approach.
Z Fold 8 Ultra: The Crease Problem Finally Gets an Answer
The large-screen foldable flagship reaches its eighth generation. For years, Samsung has taken an incremental approach with this product line, and despite being the earliest to market, more aggressive competitors have gradually caught up and even surpassed it.
The Z Fold 8 Ultra is still a modest iteration: new Snapdragon chip, thinner and lighter than the predecessor. Camera-wise, the ultrawide gets upgraded to a new 50MP sensor capable of 8K video, the main camera stays at 200MP, and the telephoto remains unchanged.

The industry widely expects Apple to launch its first foldable iPhone within months, and rumors suggest it will adopt a shorter, wider "passport" aspect ratio. Interestingly, the industry briefly experimented with this passport form factor years ago — the original OPPO Find N and the first-generation Pixel Fold both had this shape — but the entire industry gradually shifted toward Samsung's "candy bar" form factor: folded, it looks like a slightly tall regular phone; unfolded, it reveals a nearly square large screen.
The debate between these two form factors is essentially about different trade-offs between the folded cover screen aspect ratio and the unfolded inner screen use cases. The Compact Foldable's Media Consumption Experience
The Z Fold 8 inherits most of the Ultra's core features: titanium alloy flex hinge, minimal crease, new anti-reflective coating, and silicon-enhanced battery. But it's a noticeably smaller phone — remarkably light and thin, weighing just 201 grams, comparable to a regular Galaxy S26 Plus, yet packing a cover screen, inner screen, and a 4,500mAh battery.

When you unfold it to review photos, since most photos are natively 4:3, they fill the screen perfectly. The reviewer also noted that such a lightweight device is excellent for e-book reading in both folded and unfolded states. Widescreen videos will still have black bars, of course, but overall this is a comfortably palm-sized device whether open or closed.
