Agent Gateway
A Google Cloud product for managing and routing AI agent requests. It integrates with Cloud Trace to enable end-to-end distributed tracing and is built on the OpenTelemetry standard. The gateway provides a centralized control plane for directing traffic to AI agents within Google Cloud environments.
Timeline (last 90 days)
Agent Gateway does not give agents more tools, but rather gives control over how those tools are discovered and used.
An agent gateway or Policy Enforcement Point (PEP) is an architectural approach that inserts an interception layer between agent tool calls and actual system responses, dynamically deciding whether to allow, downgrade, or route to human approval based on predefined policies
After Agent Gateway is integrated with Cloud Trace, one request corresponds to one complete trace, with every hop recorded on the same timeline.
Agent Gateway's tracing capability is built on OpenTelemetry.
Using this integration requires granting the agent's service account the Cloud Trace Agent role; otherwise, the agent's own spans will disappear from the trace chain.
The Cloud Trace integration feature is still in preview, and thorough evaluation is recommended before adopting it in production environments.
Every gateway log is associated with its corresponding trace, enabling bidirectional linking between logs and traces.
Agent Gateway, launched by Google Cloud, directly integrates Cloud Trace and is currently in preview.
Agents can bypass the gateway by directly calling model provider APIs, directly accessing MCP/tool endpoints, or initiating requests through other external egress points.
The layered governance architecture proposed in the article is: Agent → Agent Gateway → LLM Gateway/Governed Tools → Models + APIs + Network/Egress Enforcement + Identity + Shadow Discovery.
