Exponential Backoff Retry
A client-side retry strategy in which the waiting time between retries increases exponentially after a failed request, optionally combined with random jitter to prevent retry storms. It is commonly used to improve fault tolerance in distributed systems.
Timeline (last 90 days)
The key difference between minimum age gating and exponential backoff retry: backoff retry still consumes the query result only delaying when it is consumed, whereas gating completely ignores results within the window, semantically severing the reasoning chain of 'query returns not found → judge as failure'.
Exponential backoff is a strategy in which the client progressively lengthens the waiting interval when retrying failed requests, mainly addressing two types of problems: rate limiting (HTTP 429) and brief unavailability of downstream services; compared with fixed-interval retries, it can significantly reduce pressure on services that are already overloaded.
Exponential backoff combined with idempotency guarantees both gives the server a recovery window and avoids duplicate billing and duplicate side effects.
