Interpretability
Interpretability is a research direction in artificial intelligence and machine learning aimed at making a model's decision processes, internal mechanisms, and predictions understandable to humans. Core objectives include revealing how models derive outputs from inputs, identifying features that influence predictions, and improving model transparency and trustworthiness. Research covers post-hoc explanation methods such as feature attribution and saliency analysis, as well as the design of inherently interpretable models, with particular importance in high-stakes domains such as healthcare, finance, and law.
Core Facts
AI safety research has developed multiple technical branches: mechanistic interpretability, red teaming, and formal verification.
Institutions including OpenAI, Anthropic, and DeepMind have all adopted interpretability as a research direction.
Model steering influences model output behavior during inference by directly modifying the activation vectors of intermediate layers, without modifying weights.

学界将推荐系统决策过程难以解释的现象称为「算法可解释性」难题,并区分出「透明性」(公开系统如何运作)与「可解释性」(为具体推荐结果给出人类可理解的解释)两个层次。
Natural language security queries require explainability, otherwise analysts may distrust the results, especially when false positives or false negatives occur.
At present, most personal AI assistants do not provide a 'complete memory export' interface, and users cannot directly view the underlying memory store; treating a Bot's self-description as acceptance evidence is dangerous, as it may merely be a restatement of the prompt rather than a query of the actual storage.
Currently, even the simplest "circuit-level" interpretability explanations can only cover a very small fraction of model behavior.
Interpretability remains one of the most intractable frontier areas in AI research to this day.
The pattern database concept originated from an MLOps platform being built around interpretability.
Most traditional post-hoc explanation methods are local attributions targeting individual predictions, making it difficult to distill them into reusable knowledge assets.
Detecting a concept and manipulating a concept are two different objectives, and there is a structural bias in the full activation space.
Explainability focuses on helping users understand why a model produced a certain result, while traceability concerns where the result came from — the two are related but distinct concepts.
Simply observing the magnitude of changes in activations or attention weights can be misleading when assessing the model's working mechanisms.
