Plan Mode
An interaction mode in Cursor in which the AI does not write code directly but instead generates a task plan and an architectural overview.
Timeline (last 90 days)
For tasks involving multiple files, multiple steps, or irreversible operations, it is recommended to enable plan mode by default; simple tasks that can be verified quickly can be executed directly to improve efficiency.
Plan mode is a human-machine collaboration paradigm that includes steps such as requirement parsing, task decomposition, dependency identification and risk checking, allows the AI to ask the user clarifying questions when information is insufficient, and embodies the "human-in-the-loop" interaction principle.
For complex multi-step tasks, the planning mode moves the cost of error correction ahead of action through "plan first, then execute", which can significantly improve the success rate.
Plan mode only discusses without modifying any files, forcing the understanding of requirements and the execution of modifications into two separate phases, making it suitable for complex business logic tasks.
